Maple Heights Farm Products
100% Grass Fed Beef
Our cows are 100% grass-fed, and never receive grain. Cows were built to grow on long-stem grasses, and studies conclude that animals raised on pasture are more fit, more calm, and better balanced nutritionally than animals fed grains. This equates to healthier meat that is better for human health than grain-fed beef in ten ways. It is: Lower in total fat, Higher in beta-carotene and vitamin E, Higher in the B-vitamins thiamin and riboflavin, Higher in calcium, magnesium, and potassium, Higher in total omega-3s, A healthier ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids (1.65 vs 4.84), Higher in CLA (cis-9 trans-11), a potential cancer fighter, Higher in vaccenic acid (which can be transformed into CLA), Lower in the saturated fats linked with heart disease.
Our pigs are raised on fresh pasture and supplemented with our organic hay and silage and non-organic, high quality grain. We also grow several varieties of squash and sunflowers for their enjoyment. In addition, they receive vegetables from our garden, kitchen scraps such as peelings from fruits and vegetables and leftover oatmeal. We do not feed any garbage or waste products for several reasons. Pigs can transmit diseases to humans and vice-versa. It is dangerous to feel garbage scraps to pigs and it is also unsanitary and greatly affects the quality and flavor of the meat. Our pigs live a pigs life, rooting up pastures while fertilizing the pastures. They find nuts, roots, seeds, and mushrooms.
Poultry: Broilers, Turkeys, Laying Hens
Our poultry products are delicious and nutritions. Except in the coldest part of winter when we move the layers into the warm barn, our birds have free access to the out-of-doors -- and they take full advantage of this. The broilers and turkeys are teated to a buffet of fresh grass and grass-hoppers twice each day. Have you cooked chicken breast that turned out dry and tough, and then blamed your cooking skills? We have come to realize that it is not your cooking skills. It is your poultry! Ours are flavorful, juicy and delicious. We regularly receive comments that we have the best poultry our customers have ever tasted. And if you use every bit of it (and make delicious soup), you will get good value for your purchase as one bird provides several meals.
We are especially proud of our organic garden. It is not perfectly weed-free, and there may be times when the squash bugs are winning a battle, but we grow a really interesting variety of really healthy vegetables. That is our primary goal -- though we do love it when it looks beautiful. This summer, our girls will be growing organic sweet corn to help them raise funds for school trips. They will plant using an Earthway, walk-behind seeder and then use an antique wheel-hoe every five days until the plants are established. They will weed by hand once every two to three weeks until the plants shade the ground and they will watch for the corn earworm and use mineral oil to discourage them. Finally, they will pick it for you on the day you pick up your order.
Made from maple sap from the many maple trees that dot the crest of the hill on our organic farm. Maple Syrup is the first food produced after a long winter and it is one of the few natural and pure, unprocessed (except for boiling) sweeteners available to us. Just two ounces contain a significant amount of calcium and b vitamins. We use it when a family member suffers from low blood sugar. We prefer this to the completely empty calories of a glucose tablet.
